Expert Tips for Maintaining Your Natural Hair Wig: Beginner Friendly

WE LOVE WIGS, we love quality-looking wigs. and yes, quality comes with looking expensive. Not that our wigs come cheap but you know what I mean. Synthetic wigs sometimes can look more expensive than natural ones, but they might not be as durable as human hair ones. That is why it is important to know the basic steps on how to care for them.

Short to say - Wigs are a popular fashion accessory that can transform your look instantly. Whether you are wearing a wig for fashion or medical reasons, taking care of it is crucial to maintain its quality and longevity. And can I say it again here at DHair, we loooove wigs.

Natural hair wigs require a bit of extra care, as they are made from real human hair. Here are some tips on treating, moisturizing, and fixing a frizzy natural hair wig.

How to Treat a Natural Hair Wig?

  • Treat your natural hair wig like you would treat your own hair.
  • Always use a gentle shampoo and conditioner to wash the wig, and avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can damage the hair strands.
  • To prevent tangles and knots, comb the wig gently using a wide-toothed comb or brush, starting from the bottom and working your way up.
  • always brush your wig from hair ends going to roots
  • if you have a knot do not rip it out, try to release the knot with your fingers, and then go over with a brush.
  • When not in use, store the wig on a mannequin head or wig stand to help maintain its shape. Avoid storing it in a damp or humid place, as too much moisture can cause the hair to become brittle and break.
  • Avoid storing your wig in direct sunlight, as that can change its color after a while.
  • never, we repeat never brush your wig with a paddle brush when jt is wet! If there are any tangles, you gently detangle them from ends to roots using our wig brush!
  • Do not store your wig for drying on a styling canva head, because that can cause your lace to strech and make your wig slay visible to others
  • use wig stand for drying, a canva head and block pins for hair styling.

How to Moisturize a Real Hair Wig?

Just like natural hair, wigs can become dry and brittle over time.

To keep your wig moisturized, use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to help restore the hair's natural oils. Oils are a must-have, as wig hairs do not have the ability to have naturally produced oil as they are not attached to the scalp. Apply hair oil evenly to the wig strands, avoiding the roots if your wig is hand ventilated in lace or mono lace wig. This can result in unnecessary hair shedding because the oil or overused leave treatment in these areas can make the hair knots untangle.

If you feel that you did use too much, do not be afraid, use a tangle teaser or natural brittle brush and even out the product throughout the hair.

Oiling your human hair wigs daily should be a regular practice.

Another way to moisturize your wig is to use a steam treatment.

If you want to refresh and revive your wig without washing it, steaming is a great option. First, fill up a steamer with water and turn it on to heat up. Place your wig on a wig head or stand, and gently brush out any tangles. Don't forget to put on heat-resistant gloves to protect your hands!

Next, hold the steamer about 6 inches away from the wig and move it back and forth to make sure all areas of the wig get steamed. While the hair is still warm, you can use your fingers or a comb to style it as desired. Keep steaming and styling until you achieve the look you want.

When you're done, turn off the steamer and let the wig cool down completely before taking it off the stand. Oh, and just a heads up - this method is only recommended for human hair wigs or high-quality heat-resistant synthetic wigs.

  • Avoid using heat tools like straighteners or curling irons, as these can damage the hair.
  • let your wig air dry, but before that apply a decent amount of hair oil. Oil is mandatory. You have to oil your natural wigs, because the hair in them lacks natural lubrication by a human scalp. Do not be afraid to pack it in real good. But remember.. start oiling it 5cm from roots.
